Nature stone has witnessed an explosion in the home flooring market. Once the main preserve of commercial foyers marble is no becoming the floor of choice even over granite and other natural stone floor products.
Because of it’s role in Roman architecture – and later in the Renaissance – Italy has been the main preserve of marble. However, Mexico, China, Spain and the new countries from the former Soviet Union are bringing the price down on fine marble.
Because it is a porous rock certain types of marble can get stained from nail polish remover, shampoo, orange juice and heavily-mineralized water. Professional floor installers will tell you to use a neutral pH sealer after installation. In addition, these sealers have to be renewed on a regular basis.
For use in entrance ways marble will have to be cleaned and resealed about every 12 – 18 months. If used in the bathroom this should be done every 9 – 12 months.
